Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the third youngest daughter of Lithuanian-Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. When her father passed away in the role of a carnival barker when Ruth was just a young girl and she was forced to keep the family going by working as a cook and server. Ruth grew in a poor Boston tenement neighborhood, Massachusetts. She was a student in Boston. Following only two school years she left for an acting profession. It was a difficult path to take. Although she got an interview in New York posing as a woman for a magazine however, there were no theatre opportunities that were offered to her. Following a short stint as a club hat girl, she decided to return home and quit her position. She was in Boston where she worked during the late night, she was an actor for New England Repertory Company and during the day she was an usherette. She graduated with a degree in drama from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
